... At Second Story, every class is a lesson in focus, patience, and continuous self-improvement, fostering poise and self-assurance. Each activity offers a chance for the brain and body to move beyond the ordinary. My goal is for my students to move with strength, grace and authenticity. The way to achieve those qualities is through technique, intention, an understanding of line and shape, and of course, repetition. Quieting the unnecessary physical responses such as tension in the shoulders or hands, developing core muscles, and alignment of the spine and large bones requires continuous attention. When these things become so natural that we don't have to think about them anymore, we become a dancer.
In this expressive art, technical aspects of training must be balanced with opportunities to respond freely to music, feelings and concepts at ever-advancing levels. Given the opportunity, students develop a movement vocabulary that becomes their own personal resource for expression. No one should have to sit when they wish to dance, and no one should have to be told exactly what to do when the music moves them.
I appreciate, as your children do, your willingness to get them to class on time, pay their tuition, and to provide what they need to participate. Most of all, we appreciate your encouragement when we need it to move through the resistance and frustration we all sometimes feel when we are trying to become more...
